What a fulfilment warehouse does 

A fulfilment warehouse receives goods, stores them, prepares orders, ships them, and handles returns. For businesses selling between Switzerland, France, and the EU, the warehouse also has to support customs clearance and cross-border routing.

Why cross-border fulfilment needs a different setup

Shipping into Switzerland is not the same as shipping inside the EU. Every shipment crossing the Swiss border needs a customs declaration. Since January 2024, customs duties on industrial products have been eliminated under the Swiss-EU free trade rules, but declarations are still mandatory. Agricultural products remain excluded.

That means the warehouse location matters. Goods stored close to the border can move faster, with fewer delays and lower handling costs. Emaloja uses warehouses on both sides of the Swiss-French border to keep goods close to the market they serve.

How the fulfilment process works

1. Goods reception
   Products arrive at the warehouse and are checked against the delivery documents. This can include quantity checks, product identification, and storage allocation.
2. Storage
   Goods are stored in the most suitable area, depending on the product type:
   -Standard stock
   -Temperature-controlled stock
   -Sensitive, luxury, or valuable items
3. Order capture and preparation
   ​Orders flow from the ecommerce site or marketplace into the warehouse system. The WMS updates stock in real time and sends picking instructions to the team.
4. Picking, packing, and shipping
   Items are picked, packed, and prepared for dispatch. Shipping labels and tracking data are generated from the same system, which helps keep order status consistent across channels.
5. Customs clearance
   For cross-border flows, customs formalities are handled before the shipment moves across the Swiss border. This helps avoid delays at export and import.
6. Returns management
   Returned goods are received, inspected, and processed according to the product type and destination. For cross-border returns, customs steps are handled as part of the process.
